Blog Post 5: "My field of Study"

As we discussed in class today, we are adding a new component to blogging: peer review. This means that your blogging will include commenting on at least two (2) of your classmate's blog posts. You will then go back to your own blog post, read the comments others have left, and respond to those comments. More specific directions are below.

Blog #5: Title your blog post “My Field of Study”
(or feel free to swap out another term you like better - for example, “My Major” or “My Discipline or “My Profession,” etc.).

Our Research Question for this Module is “What kinds of public debates and arguments are taking place in my field / major / discipline?” In order to answer this question, you’re going to have to seek out the places in mass media where...
people in your discipline are talking to each other.

In the post, provide detailed and personable answers to the following questions about your discipline:
  1. What do students in your program learn how to do?
  2. What do people who get degrees in this field usually go on to do for work?
  3. What drew you to this field?
  4. Who are the leaders/most exciting people involved in your field right now? Why? These could be individual people or specific companies, organizations, businesses or non-profits.
  5. What are the leading academic/scholarly journals in your field? Where are they published? Give us the names and locations of at least 3. (HINT: If you have no idea what the answer to this question is, try Googling “What are the top journals in [insert field of study]?” and peruse the results). Make the titles of each journal into a working hyperlink to the website for that publication. (NOTE: if your links aren’t included or don’t work or if the page it directs us to is blocked from public view, I will not be able to assign you full credit for this exercise).

Peer Review: Read/Reply/Reflect to “My Discipline/Field/Study”

  1. Use the Blog Directory for your course section to find two classmates without comments or replies on their “My Discipline/Field/Study” post.
  2. Read their post and then leave a reply engaging with the text. What did you find interesting? Why? What did you learn from it? What did you have questions or concerns about? Why? Leave questions or comments.
  3. Go back to your own “My Discipline/Field/Study” post. Go into editing mode and at the bottom of the post, leave a reflection about what you learned from your classmates. Be specific about how reading these other posts made you see some similarities or differences between the field you aspire to be a part of and the fields that your peers aspire to be a part of. What does reading about your peers’ interests and future plans make you realize about your own? What does hearing about other kinds of work make you realize about the work you see yourself one day doing?
  4. Be sure to also list who you replied to and provide working hyperlinks to each individual’s “My Thoughts on Comments” post (NOTE: if these links aren’t included or don’t work or if the page it directs us to is blocked from public view, I will not be able to assign you full credit for this exercise).

=>>Remember, if you don’t know how to create a working hyperlink, here’s a quick how-to guide.
